Happy Groundhog Day! Today we wake up the sleeping groundhog to see if he’ll see his shadow or not. I can’t think of a more accurate way to predict the weather.

Sometimes groundhogs are grumpy. We can’t be a smiley all the time for goodness sake! Although this particular “groundhog” (who is 3 months old today) doesn’t even know what a shadow is, it seems to me that the famed Punxsutawney Phil always sees his shadow, thus giving us 6 more weeks of winter.

My dad did his student teaching in Punxsutawney, PA many years ago. He said that Punxsutawney Phil and Phyllis resided in the public library, and each year they would mysteriously disappear a couple days before February 2nd. On this 125th anniversary of Phil’s appearance at Gobbler’s Knob, perhaps he won’t see his shadow…
