Cheese has long been one of our delights, hobbies, interests, indulgences. Stephen decided to try his hand at cheesemaking, so he ordered a starter kit off of Amazon. Early in September he gave it a go, following this tutorial.
Cheese curds were a lot of work! He used one gallon of milk, and created a fun homemade snack for us. Since I wasn’t really involved in the process, I’ll just give you a rough outline of how it goes:
- Heat the milk.
- Add the culture and let it ripen.
- Stir in the rennet and allow the cheese to coagulate.
- Cut the curds.
- Boil down the whey.
- Drain the curds from the whey through a cheesecloth while forming cheese into a ball.
- Slice the cheese.
- Salt and eat!
Mozzarella is next on his list to make. I wholeheartedly approve of this new hobby.
What a fun hobby! I’ve seen tutorials on making your won yogurt that I’ve been considering trying, but haven’t been brave enough. Allison makes her own ricotta often since she can make it with lactose free milk.
